Large-scale cortical displacement of a human retinotopic map.

چکیده
The aim of the current study was to determine the retinotopic organization of a patient with congenital cortical dysgenesis and normal visual function. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), detailed retinotopic maps corresponding to the four visual field quadrants were projected onto cortical surfaces. Similar to control subjects, the upper right visual field mapped onto ventral left hemisphere and was retinotopically organized. The lower right visual field's cortical representation was also retinotopically organized, yet was displaced many centimeters anteriomedially. Moreover, the entire left visual field was represented in non-retinotopically organized islands in both hemispheres. These results indicate retinotopic maps can shift in both location and topography illustrating cortical reorganization presumably due to either cortical dysgenesis or functional displacement. Simultaneous constraints on pre- and post-synaptic cells couple cortical feature maps in a 2D geometric model of orientation preference.
The most prominent feature of mammalian striate cortex (V1) is the spatial organization of response preferences for the position and orientation of elementary visual stimuli. Models for the formation of cortical maps of orientation and 'retinotopic' position typically rely on a combination of Hebbian or correlation-based synaptic plasticity, and constraints on the distribution of synaptic weigh...
متن کاملFigure-ground processing during fixational saccades in V1: indication for higher-order stability.
In a typical visual scene we continuously perceive a "figure" that is segregated from the surrounding "background" despite ongoing microsaccades and small saccades that are performed when attempting fixation (fixational saccades [FSs]). Previously reported neuronal correlates of figure-ground (FG) segregation in the primary visual cortex (V1) showed enhanced activity in the "figure" along with ...
متن کاملBasal Dendrites of Layer-III Pyramidal Neurons do not Scale with Changes in Cortical Magnification Factor in Macaque Primary Visual Cortex
Neurons in the mammalian primary visual cortex (V1) are systematically arranged across the cortical surface according to the location of their receptive fields (RFs), forming a visuotopic (or retinotopic) map. Within this map, the foveal visual field is represented by a large cortical surface area, with increasingly peripheral visual fields gradually occupying smaller cortical areas. Although c...
متن کاملIdentification of the ventral occipital visual field maps in the human brain
The location and topography of the first three visual field maps in the human brain, V1-V3, are well agreed upon and routinely measured across most laboratories. The position of 4 th visual field map, 'hV4', is identified with less consistency in the neuroimaging literature. Using magnetic resonance imaging data, we describe landmarks to help identify the position and borders of 'hV4'. The dat...
متن کاملHuman V4 and ventral occipital retinotopic maps.
The ventral surface of the human occipital lobe contains multiple retinotopic maps. The most posterior of these maps is considered a potential homolog of macaque V4, and referred to as human V4 ("hV4"). The location of the hV4 map, its retinotopic organization, its role in visual encoding, and the cortical areas it borders have been the subject of considerable investigation and debate over the ...
